Writer, Critic, & PhD Candidate
University of Washington
Katherine Cross is a Ph.D. candidate in Information Science at the University of Washington. Her work has focused on a range of topics, including online harassment, game design, AI ethics, and community management. In her activist life she’s served on the boards of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and the Third Wave Fund.
Having gotten her start at blogs like Questioning Transphobia and Feministing, her critical work on gender, politics, and tech soon found a wider audience through numerous publications worldwide, including Rolling Stone, Bitch Magazine, The Baffler, Time, The Verge, Polygon, First Person Scholar, and The Daily Beast.
She is also a sought-after thinker on technology whose commentary has appeared on NPR, ABC Radio National, Le Monde, and Dagens Nyheter among others. Not content with being a pretentious literary translatina in academia and social criticism, and encouraged by her cats, she branched out into sci-fi. Her fiction has appeared in the Lambda Literary Award nominated collection Nerve Endings, and in The Verge’s Better Worlds. She yearns for the robot uprising and encourages you to join.
